Generally, a writing is not required in order to enter into a contract; but the Statute of Frauds requires certain types of contracts to be in writing in order for the agreement to be legally enforced. As a safeguard against spurious claims, the SoF, applicable with minor variations, forbids the enforcement of certain classes of contracts unless evidenced by a written memorandum. SoF applies to contracts such as: interest in land, sale of goods for $500 or more, or an agreement not to be performed in 1 year.
