Leveraged Buyout (LBO)

An acquisition strategy used by private equity firms involving a significant amount of borrowed money to fund the purchase price. The purchased or “target” company’s assets generally serve as security for the buyer’s loan obligations which are to be paid back from the anticipated cash flow from the purchased company’s future business.
