quid pro quo

Latin for “what for what,” or “something for something,” an exchange of some kind. Quid pro quo sometimes refers to the nature of a particular exchange where one or more party insists on exacting reciprocity, as opposed to an act of goodwill or an ongoing business relationship where there tends to be more “give and take” between the parties.
